After dreaming about expansion for
more than a decade, Laurel Arts is set to move forward but in a
slightly different direction. Due to uncertain economic times,
and based upon feedback from a variety of sources, the Board of
Directors has agreed that Laurel Arts needs to continue leasing
programmatic facilities for the next five to ten years. The plan
is to find an adequate facility to house not only the dance
program, but all of our education programs as well. The Dressler
Center will continue to serve as Laurel Arts' headquarters, galleries,
and the home for affiliated and Somerfest.
The new Education and Dance Center will include three classrooms, one large art studio, three dance studios, several offices, and a variety of support spaces. The new facility will be handicap accessible and include adequate parking. The Building and Grounds Committee has been charged with finding an adequate facility ot meet these needs. By combining the education and dance programs into one space, Laurel ARts is hoping to increase attendance for all programs. It will be very convenient to have family members taking a dance class, a yoga class, and an art class all at the same time and at the same location. once a facility has been identified, Laurel Arts will begin the process of seeking funding to make the necessary renovations to create an Education and Dance Center. Grants and donations will be sought to underwrite the capital expenses. Increased participation in all programs will aid with the anticipated increase in operating costs. I want to assure you that Laurel Arts has not abandoned the bigger dream of expanding at our current location. Taking this intermediate step will allow us to grow our programs and audiences and demonstrate that the larger dream can become a reality down the road. ~ Michael Knecht Laurel Arts Executive Director |
