Act
48 of 1999 requires that Pennsylvania certified educators complete six
college credits of continuing professional education courses, 180 clock
hours of continuing professional education, or any combination of these
credits/hours equivalent to 180 hours related to their professional
education assignment, certification or obtaining administrative
certification every five years.
The Act 48 law also
requires
that: all continuing professional education courses are conducted by
approved providers, which now includes Laurel Arts.
Laurel Arts will be
offering Act
48 clock hours to educators who develop, instruct or participate in our
classes, workshops and special programs. Certified educators who are in
need of clock hours can receive hours for developing and instructing
the class. Class participants will be credited Act 48 hours if a
class or workshop pertains to an educator's course of study or teaching
assignment.
Currently, we are using the
providership in conjunction with our normal offering of classes and
workshops. In the spring of 2005, Laurel Arts wants to include
courses developed by area educators, which will appeal to teachers and
our regular patrons. Within three years, courses that can be
offered on-site to area school districts will be added. Laurel
Arts wants to enhance our current programming as well as develop into
an area resource for educators and area school districts seeking Act 48
hours or programming.
Spreading the word of our
providership seems to be our next major undertaking. The number
of certified educators within Somerset County is huge. Laurel
Arts has sent letters to area superintendents, principals and Act 48
coordinators. We will follow with fliers developed for placement
in faculty lounges and also listing our providership on our “arts
education fliers” that we distribute to area school children. If
you are interested in providing any Act 48 programs or participate in
any of our classes, please contact Aimee Brown at aimee@laurelarts.org.
